Mass Loss from Stars and the Evolution of Stellar Clusters

New NTT/SOFI near-IR narrow-band imaging and spectroscopy reveals an additional four Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars in the massive cluster Westerlund 1, bringing the total WR population to 24. Sixteen of the WR stars in Wd1 have been classified WN5–11, while eight are WC8–9. An observed WR to RSG/YHG ratio of ∼3 suggests an age of 4.5–5.0 Myr, with WR stars descended from 40–55M⊙ progenitors. On the bas...

Initial Mass Function and Galactic Chemical Evolution Models

In this contribution we focus on results from chemical evolution models for the solar neighbourhood obtained by varying the IMF. Results for galaxies of different morphological type are discussed as well. They argue against a universal IMF independent of star forming conditions.

Mass loss and AGB evolution in Galactic satellites

The effect of metallicity on the AGB mass loss is reviewed. Observations have mainly been limited to the Magellanic Clouds but are observationally feasible throughout the Local Group. Expansion velocities are predicted to depend strongly on Z but the peak mass-loss rates appear not to. The Mira PL relation shows no evidence for a Z dependence, giving a powerful potential distance indicator. I d...

Galactic Stellar and Substellar Initial Mass Function

We review recent determinations of the present day mass function (PDMF) and initial mass functions (IMF) in various components of the Galaxy, disk, spheroid, young and globular clusters and in conditions characteristic of early star formation. As a general feature, the IMF is found to depend weakly on the environment and to be well described by a power-law form for m & 1M⊙ and a lognormal form ...

Galactic Chemical Evolution

The primary present-day observables upon which theories of galaxy evolution are based are a system's morphology, dynamics, colour, and chemistry. Individually, each provides an important constraint to any given model; in concert, the four represent a fundamental (intractable) boundary condition for chemody-namical simulations. We review the current state-of-the-art semi-analytical and chemodyna...
